Turn pieces by hand, and small things fixed

In the download now. It installs over earlier betas and keeps your zines. Make a backup first.

Added

  • Turn a piece with a knob. It snaps when it is close to a quarter turn.
  • A Straighten button in Arrange, under Turn.
  • Two fingers anywhere on the page turn the chosen piece, even a small one.
  • Small pieces move when you drag their middle. A double-tap there opens them.
  • A tap just beside a small piece picks the piece you tapped. On blank paper it clears your choice.
  • Typing in a turned piece of text shows the words turned.

Changed

  • Several Move, Size or Turn taps in a row in Arrange are one Undo.
  • The ring round a chosen zine on your shelf is lighter.
  • On the folder sheet, Cancel is now a proper button.

Fixed

  • A saved PDF is named after your zine.
  • New zines are numbered: My zine, My zine 2, My zine 3.
  • Rename starts with the old name selected, and stops at 60 characters.
  • Renaming a zine no longer moves it to the front of your shelf.
  • Duplicate scrolls your shelf to the new copy.
  • Art keeps your recent and favourite pieces after you close Zinely.
  • The keyboard’s Enter key starts a new line while you type on the page.

Known limitations

  • Nothing new in this version has been tested with a screen reader.
  • Beside the page, the line from the turn knob to the piece is hard to see over the dark area.
  • The first-time tip covers a piece you chose near the top of the page until you tap Got it.
  • At twice the normal text size, the two buttons on the folder sheet stack.
  • Recent and favourite Art stay on the phone. A backup does not include them.

The download page lists all of them.

Select several, mix inks, new Art

In the download now. It installs over earlier betas and keeps your zines. Make a backup first.

Added

  • Select several zines to move or delete. One Undo puts them all back.
  • Mix your own inks. My inks keeps the last nine. My palettes keeps up to nine.
  • 124 pieces of Art, better drawn. Old zines keep their layout.
  • Two new frames: Snipped border and Round window.
  • A shelf note when a damaged zine goes back to an earlier copy.

Changed

  • One Arrange button for move, size, turn and layer.
  • The page no longer shrinks when you select something.
  • A message’s Undo goes away after your next change.

Fixed

  • Back keeps your words while you type.
  • New Bench button back to your shelf.
  • Save PDF errors say why, and that your zine is safe.
  • Text controls fit at the largest text size.
  • The first-time tip shows all its words.
  • No “can’t print yet” notice for a character your phone’s font draws.
  • Undo after deleting several zines names those already gone.
  • Undoing a move does not bring back zines you deleted since.

Known limitations

  • Not tested with a screen reader. No page printed with the new Art yet.
  • Backups do not include mixed inks or palettes. At twice the normal text size, “+ New palette” wraps to two lines.
  • At the largest text size on a small phone, the first-time tip can cover the piece you drag.
  • If Zinely restores a zine’s main file from its backup copy, it says nothing and loses the last few seconds of changes.
  • Older versions of Zinely draw nothing for a new Art piece.

The download page lists all of them.

Folders and Book font

Earlier public beta. It installs over earlier betas and keeps your zines.

Added

  • Folders on your shelf (Move to a folder). Backups keep them.
  • A second font, Book, next to Plain.
  • Words show in their own font while you type.

Changed

  • The Size button is now called Text.

Fixed

  • A deleted zine restored from a backup now shows at once, not after a restart.
  • Long text barely moves when you tap Done.

Known limitations

  • Folders and Book: not tested with a screen reader. Book not printed at its smallest size.
  • Words that just fit can lose their last line in Book. Make the box taller.
  • Book has no Greek or Cyrillic letters. You cannot choose it for words smaller than 12 pt.
  • Older versions show Book words in Plain and can drop lines that do not fit. They restore a backup with every zine on My Shelf.
  • See-through pictures still come in on white. Another app does the printing.

The download page lists all of them.

Public beta release

Published

0.9.0-beta.6

Clearer backups

Earlier public beta. It installs over earlier betas and keeps your zines.

Added

  • Undo and redo name the change, such as “Words taken off”.
  • Tap the hole in a window frame, ring or photo corner to reach what is under it.
  • Tap the drawn part of a frame to pick it up.

Changed

  • Restore adds only zines not on your shelf. It replaces nothing.
  • If you changed a zine after the backup, the backup’s copy is added next to it.
  • Font button removed. It did not choose a font.

Fixed

  • Backups shows your last backup on this phone, or that there is none.
  • No “kept safe” message before a first backup.
  • A failed backup says where, and tries to remove the unfinished file.
  • One unreadable zine no longer stops a backup. The result names it.
  • Restore says “Not enough space” when the phone is full.
  • Restore no longer says “cancelled” after zines are added.
  • With a screen reader, the page reads from top to bottom and left to right.
  • With a screen reader, the dim area behind a zine’s menu is no longer read as a button.

Known limitations

  • Tapping through a frame is not tested with a screen reader. A thin frame over a photo can need a careful tap. A frame’s edge resizes it. Drag the middle to move it.
  • With a screen reader, an undo message that repeats is sometimes spoken only once.
  • If a backup left a zine out, older versions of Zinely do not tell you when you restore it.
  • See-through pictures still come in on white. You could not choose a font yet. Another app does the printing.

Fixes

Earlier public beta. It installs over earlier betas and keeps your zines.

Changed

  • About opens with a note from Aastra, the two of us who make Zinely.
  • Font credits are under Licences & credits.
  • Reframe opens big photos faster. Print still uses the full photo.

Fixed

  • On Android 7, 8 and 9, Save PDF now asks for permission instead of failing. Share never needs it.
  • On those phones, a failed save no longer leaves a broken file in Downloads.
  • A flipped photo across two facing pages now prints the right way round.
  • Undo to another page no longer keeps the old selection.
  • Pictures with see-through backgrounds, such as logos, come in on white, not black.
  • A move or resize that ends where it started no longer adds an empty Undo or clears Redo.
  • Screen readers no longer read the dim area behind most pop-up panels as a button.

Known limitations

  • See-through pictures do not stay see-through. They print correctly. On the cream page in the app, a logo shows as a faint white rectangle.
  • On Android 7, 8 and 9, if you decline and tell Android not to ask again, Save PDF fails until you allow it in your phone’s settings. Share still works.
  • With a screen reader, About and its credits pages start on the Back button. Going back lands at the top of the previous screen. You can still reach everything by swiping. The dim area behind a zine’s menu is still read as a button here. Fixed in beta.6.
  • Replaced and deleted photos still use space. You could not choose a font yet. Zinely cannot print some writing yet, such as Bengali or Tamil. It keeps the words but does not print them. Another app does the printing.
